She was born Dec 5, 1918, the youngest of Henry and Anna Leitte Teigland’s eight children. Her father and his brothers homesteaded in the Alida, MN area in the 1890’s and raised their families there, helping to build the community and the Alida Lutheran church. She married Walter Bourcy on Sept. 14, 1940. Together they operated Bourcy’s Store in Alida for over 30 years. They were active in the community, always willing to help neighbors and friends. With love and pride they raised 3 children. Myrtle and Walter held very high standard for themselves. It would be hard to find a house that sparkled as theirs did, surrounded by flowers, vegetable and fruit gardens, pantry shelves full of the summer’s bounty, the freezer full of beef and venison with wood split and ranked high for winter’s heat. The home usually smelled of Myrtle’s notoriously delicious cooking and baking; it was impossible to enter without being offered some a little meal called “A Cup of Coffee”. Walter passed away in 1976 and Myrtle sold their home and store in Alida and moved to Bemidji to a little house on Park Ave. The busy household and big gardens were gone. Always a caregiver and nurturer, Myrtle became a Nursed Aide at Beltrami Nursing Home and worked there until she was older than some of the resident. During those years she also lost her brother Clarence who was living with her to cancer, and most heartbreakingly her son, DeWayne in a car accident in 1980. Grandchildren and great grandchildren arrived to help fill the holes in her heart. She told the stories of her life in poems, saying the serving of others was her way to heal her own heartaches. Her poems tell her love of family, friends and her trust in God’s Grace. Myrtle had several poems published but mostly, the poems were written for life’s occasions and read at many celebrations. She played the harmonica by ear. In recent years when people’s names escaped her she could still play her favorite songs and hymns by memory. She took very good care of herself and lived independently until her mid 80’s. Even the days before her passing she had no real physical complaints besides being tired. As Myrtle’s world grew smaller her daughter Marsha passed away in 2009. But memory loss saved her from the brunt of that painful time. Myrtle’s last years were spent at Neilson Place where she felt safe and received loving care.
