U.S. Veteran

Raymer Fremont Hoyum, 91 of Bemidji died Monday, January 18, 2010 at North Country Regional Hospital in Bemidji.

Funeral Services will be 2:00 pm Saturday, January 23, 2010 at the Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Kelliher, MN with Rev. Dan Heath and Mike Naylor officiating. Visitation will be from 5-7 on Friday, January 22, 2010 at the Cease Family Funeral Home in Bemidji and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Interment will be at the Fairview Cemetery in Kelliher, MN.

He was born June 28, 1918 in Stephen, MN the son of Anton and Mabel (Fodness) Hoyum. He attended school in Saum, MN. He worked in Harvest Fields in North Dakota for many years, cut pulp and worked for J.C. Cambell, worked for John Wolden at the farm and drove school bus for Joe Jerome. He bought the Hoyum farm in Saum in 1940. He picked potatoes to buy the farm and a car. He served with the US Army from July ‘42 to November’45. He served in the North African, Italian, French and German Theaters of operation. He married Louise Nordby April 15, 1943 in Newport, Kentucky. He hauled cream two days a week and traded his cream truck job for Standard Oil Bulk dealership which he ran from 1948-1976 in Kelliher. He retired in 1976. He served on the School Board, Kelliher Fire Department and City Council and as Mayor of Kelliher. He served on State Committees for the Department of Health, Area Aging Board (Nutrition Program), Bi-County Cap as treasurer and member and he also served as Beltrami County Commissioner for the 4th District from 1975-1980. He was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Kelliher, Bethel Lutheran Church in Bemidji and the American Legion in Kelliher. He enjoyed woodworking, making diamond willow canes, collecting old coins, buttons, irons and tools. He also enjoyed hunting deer, traveling around the country, RVing and spending 13 winters in Arizona.

He is survived by his wife Louise Anne Hoyum of Bemidji; children Loren (Edith) Hoyum of Bemidji, Robert (Cheryl) Hoyum of Kelliher, Marilyn (Kenneth) Hartwig of Bemidji, Gerald (Wanda) Hoyum of Cass Lake and Cindy (James) Bronczyk of Bemidji; 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren , two sisters- Marie Park of Kansas City, MO and Helen Rolph of Eagan, MN and a foster daughter- Cheryl (Brad) Rhodes of PeEll, Washington.

He was preceded in death by his parents Anton and Mabel Hoyum, brother Merle Hoyum and sister Arlene Hoyum and 2 great grandchildren Drew and Gracie Hoyum.

Honorary Casketbearers will be all his grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the donor’s choice.
