Richard LeRoy Malterud

Richard LeRoy Malterud, 81, of Bemidji, MN, died Saturday, July 28, 2012 at the Havenwood Care Center.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 am, Thursday, August 2, 2012 at the St. Philip’s Catholic Church in Bemidji. A vistitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Bemidji, MN under the direction of the Cease Family Funeral Home of Bemidji.
He was born on April 28, 1931, in Bemidji, MN, the son of Ingvald and Florence (Brennan) Malterud. He was raised in Becida, and went to school in Bemidji, graduating from Bemidji High School in 1949. He worked in North Dakota for a year with his uncle, and then enlisted in US Navy in 1951. He served on the USS Rupertus during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1954. He worked as a truck driver for Kelliher’s delivering mobile homes around Minnesota. He married Doris (Hofmeister) Craig on September 2, 1978, at St. Philip’s Catholic Church in Bemidji. He began work in 1979 for the US Postal Service, and worked there for 25 years until his retirement. He was a lifelong member of the VFW, and the DAV. He was also a member of the American Legion, St. Philip’s Catholic Church, served as Governor of the Bemidji Moose Lodge, and a very active leader in the Boy Scouts of America. He enjoyed dancing, bowling, and was a bird enthusiast, feeding and watching them in the backyard. He loved to spend time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his: Wife, Doris Malterud of Bemidji, Sons, Eric (Lisa) Malterud of Grand Forks, ND, Jason Malterud of Longmont, CO, Stepchildren, Sandy (Dirk) Beer of Bemidji, MN, Randy (Penny) Craig of Bemidji, MN, 6 Brothers, and 2 Sisters, 14 Grandchildren, and 7 Great-Grandchildren He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, 1 sister, Step-daughter Linda Cairns, and Step-son Shannon Craig.
