William “Bill” George Harms, 64, of Bemidji died Thursday, May 10th at his home on Big Turtle Lake in Bemidji.

A memorial service will be held Monday, May 14, 2012 at 11 AM at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Bemidji with Rev. Genelle Netland officiating under the direction of the Cease Family Funeral Home of Bemidji with military honors provide by the American Legion post # 14 of Bemidji.

Bill was born December 8, 1947 in Bertha, Minnesota, the son of Henry and Olga (Haase) Harms.
He was raised and educated in Bertha, graduating from Bertha High School. Bill served in the US Army, and was stationed at Scofield Army base, Oahu, Hawaii.
He married Cheryl Bakken on September 28, 1974 in Erskine, MN

Bill received bachelors and masters degrees from Bemidji State University. For most of his career, he taught Industrial Technology at Bemidji High School. He had a passion for teaching, and had a talent for helping students establish their careers.

Bill was a talented builder and craftsman. He was a skilled welder, a thoughtful woodworker, and efficient builder. His craftsmanship also extended to cooking, and he was renown as an adventurous gourmet cook.

He spent much of his time outdoors. He enjoyed deer hunting at the Branstner farm. Each summer he cultivated large organic gardens with his wife, Cheryl. Most summer weekends would find them camping. From childhood he was a lover of animals and had ability to quickly establish rapport with them.

Bill had a big heart, was generous and loyal to his friends, and was a loving husband and father. He strongly supported his daughters in all of their endeavors. He was also proud of his German heritage. He was an active member of the color guard of the American Legion post # 14.

He is survived by his wife Cheryl,
daughters - Tamara (Samuel Norlin) and Kristi (Joseph Barbiero);
siblings Arthur Harms, Wallace Harms, Vernon Harms, and Norma Buchanan;
mother-in-law Marian Varnson;
brother-in-laws Myles (Shirley) Bakken and Lowell (Sheryl) Bennes
and many nieces and nephews.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Olga Harms, and sisters-in-law Alice Harms and Marlene Bennes.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to a fund to be established in his name to benefit Minnesota State Parks.
