Obituary for Walter Scott
Rev. Walter Reed Scott, 87, of Bemidji, MN died Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at Havenwood Care Center in Bemidji.
A Memorial and Celebration Service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, March 16th 2013 at the United Methodist Church in Bemidji. Revs. Gay Albers and Mark Papke-Larson will officiate.
Walter was born August 9, 1925 in Neillsville, Wisconsin, the son of Jess and Dorothy (Huckstead) Scott. He was raised and educated in Neillsville. At the onset of WWII he enlisted in the Navy and was trained as a naval engineer. At the close of the war, he attended the University of Michigan, and then at the Theological Seminary of Chicago, IL. He was ordained into ministry by the United Church of Christ.
He married Rachel Shields in South Haven, Michigan in 1949. Together they shared in ministering in Garfield County, Colorado (5 yrs); Newaygo, Michigan (11yrs); Mayville, ND (4yrs); Grand Forks, ND (19 yrs). They retired to a year of volunteer work in Chicago, IL at the Kovler Center for Torture Survivors before moving to Bemidji, MN, in 1991.
Walt served his family, community, country and world in monumental, but humble ways including: lifelong commitments alongside Rachel in interracial, ecumenical and peace and justice ministries: marching with Martin Luther King Jr. in 1965; Co-founder of Red River Valley Peaceworkers ; Co-founder of Grand Forks Habitat for Humanity; Bemidji’s Habitat for Humanity and Restore, participation in Witness for Peace in Nicaragua; dedicated letter writer for Amnesty International; recipient of ND Peace Coalition Prairie Peacemaker Award; recipient of ND Governor’s Martin Luther King Award; Bemidji Area Race Relations Meritorious Service Award; member of Bemidji Area Race Relations Council, founding member/coordinator Beltrami County Indian Inmate Jail Program, member of Western MN Association of UCC, member of All Nations Indian UCC Church in Minneapolis; affiliate member of Bemidji United Methodist Church. He was an avid lifelong fan of the Chicago Cubs and the Green Bay Packers.
Walt is survived by three daughters, Kathleen Scott (Loren) Fliflet, Fargo, ND,
Christine Scott (Ryan) Bakken, Thompson, ND,
and Carol Scott, Moorhead, MN,
seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren,
2 brothers- James (Grace) Scott, Dallas, TX,
and Robert, Signal Mountain, TN.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Rachel and his son, Steven.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Bemidji’s Habitat for Humanity, North Country Hospice-Bemidji, Bemidji United Methodist Church and Bemidji’s Village of Hope.
